The improvement of the surface properties of AISI 316L type stainless steel by boronizing
      Publication / Publisher
      ITU dergisi /d Mühendislik 10, 2, 115-121
      Publication Date
      2011
The aim of this study is to clarify the improvement of surface properties of AISI 316 L type stainless steel by thermo-chemical boronizing technique. In this study, boronizing bath was consisting of mixing of the silicon carbide, borax and boric acid in the salt bath. Boronizing process were performed different temperature and time. After the boronizing process, the various tests to determine the properties of bo-ride layer were done.
The results of this investigation can be summarized as follows, a) Thickness of boride layer on the sur-face of boronized AISI 316 L stainless steel in-creased as a parabolic with increasing temperature and time, b) The boride layers of boronized samples show continuity the surface. The surface structure of boride layer is more homogeneous and more densi-ty,c) The basic phase for the boride layer occured with boronizing technique was Fe2B. The FeB did not occur, d)Activation energy of boride layer oc-curred with boronizing was 231.886 kJ/mol, e)The surface roughness values of boronized samples in-creased both the increasing additive ratio and in-creasing boronizing temperature. There is not affair to the effect on the roughness of the boronizing time and the type of the additives, The residual stress of boride layer increased with increasing temperature.

Influence of Boronizing on Mechanical Properties of EN-C35E Steel
      Publication Date
      2004
Key Engineering Materials, Vol. 264-268 (2004) pp. 629-632 (in english)
One of the promising methods of increasing surface hardness of engineering tools is boronizing. The boronized parts have extreme hardness exceeding 2000 HV, excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. In this study, salt bath boronizing processes were performed on EN-C35E steel substrate in slurry salt bath containing borax, boric acid as boron sources and ferro-silicon as reductant. The process was performed at the temperature of 850° and 950°C for 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours. Boride layers were examined by optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Mechanical properties of boride layer were characterized with hardness and fracture toughness measurement. Boride layer hardness was measured by knoop indenter under load of 0,5N and fracture toughness of borided surfaces for 950°C was measured using Vickers indenters with a load of 4N. Metallographic and XRD analysis revealed that single-type Fe2B layers were formed on the surface of EN-C35E steel. Depending on boronizing time and temperature, it was found that the hardness of boride layer ranged from 1895-2143 HK 0.05 that is nearly 8 times higher than the steel substrate hardness. It was observed that the fracture toughness of boride layer ranged from 3.60 to 4.20 MPa m1/2.

Boronizing, which involves diffusion of boron atoms into steel substrate to form. hard iron borides is well known diffusion coating technique. In this study, salt bath boronizing processes were performed on EN-C35E steel substrate in slurry salt bath containing borax, boric acid as boron sources and ferro-silicon as reductant. The process was performed at 850 and 950°C for 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours. Boride layers were examined by optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Hardness of borides formed on the steel substrate was measured by Knoop indenter under load of 0.5N. Metallographic studies and XRD analysis revealed that single-type Fe2B layers were formed. Depending on boronizing time and temperature, it has found that the hardness of boride layer ranged from 1895-2143 HK0.05 that is nearly 8 times higher than substrate hardness. The thickness of the layer ranged from 25 to 167 μm depending on boronizing time and temperature.
Failure of a 17-4 PH Stainless Steel Sailboat Propeller Shaft
      Publication Date
      2003
Engineering Failure Analysis, 10,(2003), 711-717 (in english)
In this study, a 17-4 PH precipitation hardening stainless steel propeller shaft failed in use when installed in a sailboat working in a marine environment. Failure analysis was conducted on the propeller shaft. Results indicate that the failure was caused by the fracture of the propeller shaft by torsional fatigue and stress corrosion cracking (SCC). SCC progressed transgranulary in the martensitic matrix.
The Effects of Metallurgical structures of Different Alloyed Glass Mold Cast Irons on The Mold Performance
      Publication Date
      2002
      Materials Letters, 55, (2002), 360-363. (in english)
Cast irons are commonly used as mold material in production of glass materials. Since wear and oxidation are the main failure mechanisms that limit the surface life of glass molds, the aim of the present study was to examine the wear and oxidation behavior of cast irons by the addition of alloying elements. Glass mold cast irons must exhibit both wear resistance and oxidation resistance and this dual requirement can be met by D-type graphite structure and small amounts of Mo, Ni and Cu alloying.
The Effect of Sputter Cleaning and TiN Coating After Sputter Cleaning on Tensile and Fatigue Behaviour of a Nodular Cast Iron
      Publication Date
      2001
      Z.Metallkunde, 92, (2001), 584-588 (in english)
In this study, the effect of sputter cleaning and TiN coating after sputter cleaning on tensile and fatigue behaviour of GGG 40 grade nodular cast iron was studied. It was found that sputter cleaning and TiN coating after sputter cleaning by arc physical vapour deposition technique improved the static and dynamic strength properties (tensile strength and endurance limit) of GGG 40 grade nodular cast iron material at the same amount and these properties were increased about 20 MPa. From this result, it is concluded that TiN coating did not cause a further increase in these properties after sputter cleaning.
